The big F. A scary word for most of us right? Knowing that you’ve failed something is painful and makes you feel negative through and through. The media have ploughed it into our head that “failure is not an option”. But how do you think great philosophers got by? How do you think scientists built amazing technology? Failure is only a failure when you don’t try until you succeed. And you’re like: Karisha, what the hell are you talking about right now? Simply put, failure IS an option AND it’s necessary for success.
Growing up, the negative notions of failure have always been ingrained in my mind. Knowing that I’d put so much effort into doing something, and not having my desired result. It weighed me down greatly, knocked down my confidence and so just didn’t feel like I was capable to pass it again. So what changed during this time of adulthood?
I learnt that without failure, we wouldn’t know where we went wrong. We wouldn’t know HOW to fix it. And that for me is a problem in itself!
We live in a world where we can choose how we perceive things. We have more understanding, more resources and more help that we can access. Trying something that doesn’t work out is fine! You fancy that new Thai dish and it doesn’t work out for you? Try another, and you’ll know what you do/don’t like! It’s part of a natural process that shouldn’t be feared and should rather be encouraged to try again.
So the next time you feel down in the dumps about something not quite going your way. Just remember that only you can determine that success. And you’ve got to work for it. Don’t be afraid to fail, because failure is not falling down Failure is staying down.
(Pretty cool saying that I will use in front of everyone now)
