The Jallianwala Bagh massacre is one of the most horrific incidents in Indian history, and General Reginald Dyer is widely considered the chief perpetrator of this heinous crime. On 13th April 1919, General Dyer, who was the commander of the British army in Amritsar, ordered his troops to open fire on a peaceful gathering of unarmed Indian civilians at the Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, Punjab. The massacre resulted in the death of over 1000 people and left several others injured, making it one of the most tragic incidents in India’s colonial history.

General Dyer’s actions that day were motivated by his desire to maintain British colonial rule in India and suppress the Indian independence movement. However, the massacre sparked outrage and indignation among Indians and the international community, leading to increased demands for India’s independence and the end of British colonial rule.

General Dyer’s actions have been widely condemned by historians, politicians, and human rights activists, who view him as a symbol of colonial oppression and brutality. Many Indians consider him to be the most hated public figure in Indian history, and his name continues to be associated with the Jallianwala Bagh massacre to this day. His unhinged need for power led him to become nothing but evil to say the least.

Despite the passage of time, General Dyer’s actions at Jallianwala Bagh continue to haunt the collective memory of Indians, and the wounds of the massacre have not fully healed. The tragedy serves as a reminder of the brutality of colonial rule and the importance of freedom and democracy.
