Have you ever been judged for your reading choices? Have you ever felt belittled for enjoying classic literature? I have. Recently, I went to Waterstones to buy a copy of Emma by Jane Austen, and I was met with heavy scrutiny by an anti-Jane Austen fan. He told me that it was unoriginal and Austen fans have nothing else to talk about, and that there were different and better things to read out there. He made me feel like rubbish, and I wanted to cry after being scrutinized for simply wanting to buy a book. However, I refused to let his words get to me, and neither should you. Well.. (if that meant almost crying in the shopping centre and having my bf there to make me feel better).
Jane Austen’s works are classic for a reason. Her novels offer timeless insights into human nature, relationships, and society. Emma is a brilliant example of her writing style and storytelling abilities. It’s perfectly fine to want to read a book that’s been around for centuries and has stood the test of time. I’ve never read it. It’s a classic. Let me live bro??
It’s disheartening to hear that some people make others feel inferior for their reading choices. Reading is a personal and subjective experience, and no one should feel ashamed of what they choose to read. Just because someone doesn’t enjoy a particular author or genre doesn’t give them the right to belittle others who do. Everyone has different tastes and preferences when it comes to reading, and that’s okay.
If someone judges you for reading Jane Austen or any other classic literature, don’t let their words get to you. You have every right to enjoy what you love, and you don’t need anyone’s approval to do so. Don’t let the negativity of others bring you down. Keep reading, keep learning, and keep enjoying the stories that capture your heart and mind.
In conclusion, don’t let anti-Jane Austen fans bring you down. Whether it’s Jane Austen or any other author, the most important thing is that you find joy and meaning in the books you choose to read. Don’t let anyone make you feel bad for what you enjoy reading. Stand up for yourself and your reading choices, and don’t let anyone’s judgmental behavior get in the way of your love for literature.
