Social media platforms like Instagram have become a huge part of our daily lives for inspiration, motivation and curiosity. It’s not unusual to find yourself scrolling for a few hours and wondering where the time went! While it’s an amazing creative platform, it also creates a negative impact on those who can’t have these seemingly perfect lifestyles. Suddenly comparing ourselves to others has become a standard. And not a good one.
It’s essential to recognize that everyone has their unique journey and timeline, and it’s not fair or healthy to compare your achievements to others. Social media generally makes it easy to fall into the trap of comparing your life to those of others, but it’s essential to remember that what people post on social media is just a highlight reel of their lives. Nobody’s life is perfect, and what you see on Instagram is not necessarily the reality. But how many of us repeat this to ourselves when we think “ah I wish I could have that car like this person”? Let’s be real, we forget.
Instead of focusing on others’ achievements, it’s crucial to focus on your own goals, progress, and journey. Take the time to reflect on what you’ve accomplished and the progress you’ve made, and celebrate your milestones, no matter how small they may seem. For example: I’ve recently been struggling over the idea that I’m approaching my mid 20’s and all my friends have a partner, got engaged/married and some even have kids! I know I’m nowhere near to getting engaged, let alone have a child. But this is my personal journey. Sometimes you need to take a step back and do what’s best for you rather than pressuring yourself to achieve these unrealistic “dreams” (I say dreams lightly as some can be achievable and some are a reach).
Remember guys, it doesn’t matter how old you are, you can try something new, you can achieve anything that’s within your capability. But do not PRESSURE yourself into doing it because you’re trying to impress people that have no relevance to your life.
It’s 2023. It’s my life. My small milestones matter. Thank you and goodbye.
