Self-esteem is like the fuel for our confidence engine. When we’re running low, it can be tough to get through the day. But don’t worry, there are plenty of ways to boost your self-esteem and get back in the driver’s seat of your life!
- Practice self-compassion
Self-compassion is the ability to be kind and understanding towards ourselves during difficult times. Instead of criticizing and berating ourselves when we make mistakes, we should be gentle and understanding. When we’re struggling, we can remind ourselves that everyone makes mistakes and that it’s a normal part of the human experience. Don’t be so hard on yourself for the things you can’t control.
- Challenge negative thoughts
Negative thoughts can be harmful and contribute to low self-esteem. When we notice ourselves having negative thoughts, it’s important to challenge them. We can ask ourselves if the thought is true, and if there is evidence to support it. If not, we can replace it with a more positive thought. Easier said than done right? But sometimes even doing something that you enjoy like watching a comedy or maybe trying something new could boost up how you feel!
- Set achievable goals
Setting achievable goals can help boost self-esteem by giving us a sense of accomplishment and purpose. When we set a goal, it’s important to make sure it’s realistic and attainable. Setting goals that are too ambitious can lead to disappointment and frustration. Remember that you must pride yourself for the small achievements as they all add up to make the big pie!
- Practice gratitude
Gratitude is the practice of being thankful for the things we have in our lives. By focusing on the things we’re grateful for, we can shift our attention away from negative thoughts and feelings. This can help to boost our self-esteem and improve our overall well-being. I know for me personally, I donate to GOSH (Great Ormond Street Hospital) Children’s Charity. Knowing that I can contribute to helping kids have a better future brings me so much joy and below me reflect on how grateful I am for having a healthy childhood.
- Get active
Physical activity has been shown to boost self-esteem and improve overall well-being. Whether it’s going for a run, taking a yoga class, or simply going for a walk, being active can help to boost our mood and reduce stress. You could even trying the punching the pillow trick to help get your anger out!
- Take care of yourself
Self-care is important for maintaining good physical and mental health. By taking care of ourselves, we’re showing ourselves that we’re worth the effort. This can include things like getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and taking time to relax and do things that we enjoy. I’ve found that self affirmation has really helped me to stay focused and motivated.
- Surround yourself with positive people
The people we spend time with can have a big impact on our self-esteem. Surrounding ourselves with positive and supportive people can help to boost our self-esteem and improve our overall well-being. Sometimes leaving what’s not meant for us is the best decision we ever make to move forwards. You want people around you to support and be proud of your achievements!
- Seek professional help
If you’re struggling with low self-esteem, it’s important to seek professional help. A therapist or counselor can work with you to help identify the underlying issues and develop strategies for improving your self-esteem. For the most part, I was very sceptical about having a random person to share my personal problems with, however, it was easier to share my woes abs somewhat better. You don’t know the person, it’s a judgement free place and there’s an endless supply of tissues!
Remember that it is a journey and it takes time to see results. Be patient with yourself and know that it’s possible to improve your self-esteem. Regardless if you’re starting the new year of 2023 with new goals or you’re mid way through the year and reading this. The most important thing is to start today and take the first step towards a more positive and fulfilling life. And do it at your own pace.
